In surfing, timing is everything. There is a critical moment when a wave’s energy reaches a point of no return and the water begins to tumble into a cascade of overwhelming force.
This is an exploration of that breaking point -- when predictability gives way to chaos. Each piece in this collection is an abstract articulation of the transition from tranquility into turmoil — and the beauty, power, and uncertainty of what comes next.
During summer, beaches are hot and crowded carnival scenes. Eventually, however, the season winds down: days get shorter, temperatures drop and tourists return home. Finally, with a gesture symbolic of change, the lifeguard stations are locked up for the season.
This portfolio explores these stations in winter. To me, they are “strangers in a strange land:” aloof, isolated and momentarily devoid of function but, at the same time, alert and ready for summer to return again.
During the Covid pandemic, travel was curtailed and safety was found in isolation. For landscape artists who revel in the grandeur of nature, this was a difficult time. Looking for inspiration, I stumbled upon a single square meter of succulents thriving outside my back door.
This collection is an exercise in slowing down, seeing and appreciating the normally overlooked. It celebrates the simple forms and textures that surrounds us.
